High/Scope’s educational approach emphasizes "active participatory learning". Active learning means children have direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas. Children’s interests and choices are at the heart of High/Scope® programs. They construct their own knowledge through interactions with the world and the people around them.
Children take the first step in the learning process by making choices and following through on their plans and decisions. Teachers, caregivers, and parents offer physical, emotional, and intellectual support. In active learning settings, adults expand children’s thinking with diverse materials and nurturing interactions.
Growing Readers Early Literacy Curriculum
This High/Scope® program follows an "active learning" educational approach, with children choosing hands-on activities that help them become successful and motivated readers. The small group literacy activities support the four critical components of early literacy - literacy comprehension, phonological awareness, alphabetic principle and concepts about print.

Learning Language and Loving It™
To further support quality early learning, Family Day is committed to training all our child care centre staff in Learning Language and Loving It™ - The Hanen Program for Early Childhood Educators/Teachers. This approach promotes children's social, language and literacy development within every day activities and conversations.
Family Day was featured in The Hanen Centre's December 2007 issue of WigWag – a publication for Hanen Certified Speech-Language Pathologists worldwide.
“Family Day took on the not-so-minor task of training its entire child care staff. … They were looking for a comprehensive training model to compliment their High/Scope® curriculum, enabling them to create language-rich environments in which children are engaged in frequent, stimulating interactions with educators and peers.”
